Located in the affluent suburb of Bangsar sits Bangsar Shopping Center or as it is more often known as 'BSC'. A dominant presence in the area since the early 90s, it sits in the midst of huge houses, impressive condominiums and is a stone's throw away from the bustling clubs of Bangsar Telawi.

BSC is not what you would call a city mall but rather a bustling chic community mall serving the large expatriate and wealthy local community living around it.

Since the introduction of Bandar Raya as its management, BSC has undergone a major revamp, that has cost RM15 million, to undertake. From a complete paintjob to delicate landscaping, BSC has turned itself into a very cool yet still relaxing place to hang out at.

With its tenants covering the whole lifestyle spectrum, BSC is the ideal place to scout things for the home, buy imported food from Cold Storage supermarket, and take a break in one of the many restaurants and coffee shops it has to offer. Rather than set itself against the clubs and bars of Bangsar Telawi, BSC is aimed more for the family, though Uncle Chilli's with its alfresco bar is very popular for people to meet and flirt.

Packed with lots of individual boutiques, 120 in all and spread over 250,000 sq. ft., there is a lot to do at BSC. Even with its lack of a department store, though first draft of the site did include options for one, you don't miss the lack of an Isetan or Parkson. Instead, other anchor tenants have taken over. For instance, Guardian is absolutely huge, a Times Bookstore can take your attention away for hours while the beautiful home décor store Home has its own little coffee shop.

The other big tenant is of course, The Actor's Studio, the only arts orientated center located in a shopping mall here. Given the RM12 million spent on revamping what was originally an old cinema into what is now a state of the art theatre, it has now generated a new sense of life and interest in the arts in the area.

Besides the stores, BSC has upped its commitment to F&B. Not particularly its forte in the early days, the place now focuses quite highly on it. The introduction of cabana like tents ala Bukit Bintang style has increased business to the coffee shops Coffee Bean and Austin Chase tremendously. Its food center Chowzers is also unlike your normal food court as it is the first to have the upmarket restaurant Chinoz as one of its tenants, the Chinoz Express not only dishes out food but also has a full-on bar for those wanting to drink out on the huge veranda.

Chinoz Express is also home to the Friday Talent Showcase, where aspiring entertainers, can take to the stage and perform. Absolutely free, all you need to do is call BSC, have an informal audition, pass that, whereby you can then aim for the stars crooning your own edition of 'Stairway to Heaven' if you choose.

Another musical alternative is the Sunday Jazz Fiesta, where albeit more professional musicians serenade Sunday shoppers with Jazz and Blues classics. Catch them while sipping a coffee and make your Sundays what they are meant to be - totally relaxing.

If you prefer a bit more action, then the Saturday International Bazaar could be ideal. Unlike most other markets, the bazaar is more upscale with a huge array of items on offer. From its launch, only nine months ago has grown from only, having 35 vendors to over 100 now. It has to be checked out for its abundance of handicrafts, jewelry, home-cooked food, plants and clothes and more and is probably the only Sunday market that had a travel agency renting out a table so that you could book your holidays there and then.

Bangsar Shopping Centre is a refined shopping mall, but it isn't a complete snob either. You will find exclusive boutiques but that doesn't mean Gucci has a store there and while you will find a scrumptious deli selling only the best in imported meats and cheeses, there is a McDonalds upstairs.

BSC is a great place to shop and wander around in. It doesn't have the usual gangs of kids hanging out, and you will probably see more expats there then anywhere else, but for a community lifestyle shopping center it provides a lot more than the usual and shouldn't be dismissed as another bland shopping mall. It definitely has too much style for that.
