Pasar Malam

A Malay word, 'pasar malam' when translated into English denotes night market. Pasar malams are usually held once a week as the vendors are nomadic in nature, moving and setting up their stalls from one housing estate to another. Pasar malams have always attracted throngs of people wherever it is held due to the many available stalls selling an assortment of things such as fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, fish and meats, decorative trinkets, hair ornaments, toys, clothes, audio and visual merchandise, local delicacies and even pets!

In addition to these, there are also the permanent pasar malams which have also become major tourist attractions. These are much bigger, offering more merchandise in terms of volume and variety. Such pasar malams can be found in Jalan Chow Kit, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Petaling in Kuala Lumpur; the Esplanade and Gurney Drive in Penang; Central Market in Kota Bharu, Kelantan; Glutton's Corner in Malacca; and Lido Beach and Medan Seler Perhentian Bas in Johor Bharu.
In addition to variety, pasar malams are such hits with the public due to the inexpensive wares offered. It is highly recommended to visit these places, even if you do not have anything to purchase, as pasar malams are an integral part of the Malaysian way of life. However, whilst there, it is pertinent to bargain when purchasing non-perishable goods as it is a common practice in pasar malams.
